Support for individuals

The regeneration of Barking and Dagenham will create thousands of extra jobs in the borough. We want to make sure that local people have access to training opportunities that provide the right skills and qualifications that mean they can access these jobs, as well as those arising through the wider re-development of the Thames Gateway.

We are working with our partners to support skills development for key sectors of the local economy, including construction, health, social care and the public services, cultural and creative services, retail and manufacturing.

Key issues for us in supporting local people into work are:

The need to ensure that wherever possible projects and initiatives provide support to the work-related learning activities of young people aged 14-19
The need to include the development of skills for life (literacy, numeracy, English for speakers of other languages) and other employability skills
The need to have reference to equalities issues and the impact of activities on particular target groups, such as disabled people and minority ethnic groups
To support local job brokerage services that can match those trained up with particular job vacancies
The need to address the availability of local, quality affordable childcare where this acts as a barrier to work

Barking Job Shop|

Barking Job Shop provides a job brokerage service, supporting you with all aspects of finding work, including advice on your CV, help to complete council and other application forms and interview technique guidance. The Job Shop is based on the 1st floor of Vicarage Field Shopping Centre.

Connexions Careers Management Future|

Connexions Careers Management Future provides free careers advice to all ages.

Job Centre Plus|

Job Centre Plus is responsible for all benefits paid to people of working age, providing help and support in securing employment.

DABD (UK)|

DABD provides a range of free training courses as well as support to get back to work.
