Gateway to Health and Social Care

The NHS has a plan to grow, develop and keep its workforce and has designed a 'skills escalator' so that people can increase their skills and knowledge within the Health and Social Care sector.

The Gateway to Health and Social Care Project has been created to support residents of the borough aged between 13-65 years.

The project is able to offer career advice, help in sourcing job vacancies and training opportunities. It can also offer assistance in accessing work experience and volunteering in the sector. 2 outreach workers support the project.

The project is partnered by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, and Barking, Havering and Redbridge Hospitals NHS Trust.

Careers in the Health and Social Care sector include the following:

Ambulance staff
Art, Drama and Music
Home Carer
Medical Secretary
Nurse
Porter and Residential Care Assistant

Outreach workers will work with schools and other education providers to develop:

Work placement opportunities in the sector
Work experience for those in year 11
Practical experience for those aged 16+
Placements for those undertaking health-related vocational training
Liaison and promotional work with schools
Work with the Youth Service and other agencies in contact with young people
Local Modern Apprenticeships in care

Additional outreach work will be undertaken with providers and adults to:

Collate and promote vacancies across the health and social care spectrum
Liaise with providers to assess their recruitment needs and the skills required by local people to access these vacancies
Ensure that local education, skills and training providers are meeting the needs of the health and social care sector and the unemployed
Work with the voluntary sector to develop pathways into training
The NHS has designed a 'skills escalator'. This enables the workforce to extend their skills and knowledge wherever they work within the health and social care sector
Pre-employment training opportunities are developed with organisations such as Job Centre Plus and other local providers
