A planning application was submitted in December 2007 for the first stage of development at the former Lintons Estate in Barking Town Centre.
The application comprises a single 18 storey building consisting of a business centre and café with 70 flats above. The building will be located on the junction of Linton Road and Cambridge Road and will provide a striking addition to the regeneration of the town centre.
Barking Business Centre will be located on the lower 4 storeys, and is one of 2 business centres being built in the borough as part of the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI) programme.
It will provide much needed space for small businesses, and aims to bring home the message to local residents and visitors that Barking and Dagenham is a place where businesses can start up and flourish. The centre will provide businesses with a range of facilities, services and support needed to boost their growth.
The ground floor will offer a conference room, café and training room, with the business centre providing around 150 small business units together with meetings rooms and informal breakout spaces.
The centre will be a place where businesses interact and learn from each other, as well as from on-site business counsellors. The location is highly accessible being a few minutes walk from Barking station and has been created to conform with rigorous ecologically friendly design criteria.
Another business centre is being built on part of the site of the Frizlands depot site on Rainham Road North in Dagenham.
