London Riverside

Eastern end of Thames View estate

The eastern end of Thames View is one of 6 housing regeneration areas identified by the Council. The estate renewal scheme for the area meets several objectives.

These include achieving the Council's commitment to the Decent Homes standard; reducing the 'cliff edge' effect in an area directly adjacent to the major development of Barking Riverside and acting to enhance a 'gateway' development to Barking Riverside.

The decision to redevelop the area came after the council found that it would cost around £7 million to bring the homes up to the government's decent homes standard by 2010.

The area is made up of both high-rise and low-rise blocks and refurbishing them would only have extended the life of the properties by about 10 years. To make best use of resources and increase the housing supply, a redevelopment option is currently being followed.

Over the next few months the council has been working with local residents and partners to produce a Masterplan of the area and carrying out a demolition programme at the Eastern End.

Demolition of blocks

The 4 high rise blocks were demolished in September 2008 followed by the demolition of 3 low rise blocks in November 2008. The remaining low rise blocks will be demolished in 2009.

Working with residents on the Thames View Masterplan

We have been working in partnership with local residents to produce a Masterplan of the area. Stage one of the consultation was completed in October 2008, which identified a number of major issues.

Key recommendations from the initial consultation included improvements to health, education and community facilities; additional sports and leisure facilities; better use of the green ribbon space; and improvements to local streets and roads.

Suggestions from the local community have been incorporated by the design team into the Masterplan Exhibitions, along with principles and ideas about how to transform the estate into a vibrant place to live.

We are keen to involve local people in the scheme via the consultation process, residents are encouraged to investigate the new proposals, share insights and opinions with the design team.

Different design formats were presented to local people for further discussion in stage 2 of the consultation exercise in the Masterplan Exhibition on Saturday 17 January 2009.

Workshops were arranged with local residents to discuss the masterplan, which will be fed back into the final Masterplan.

A final exhibition was held on Saturday 4 April 2009 to inform local people on the outcome of the consultation explaining and showing how this has formulated the Masterplan for Thames View.
