Regeneration and Renewal

Ambition for South Dagenham

Restructuring by Ford with their stronger focus south of the A13 has resulted in land becoming available and a unique opportunity arising.

The South Dagenham site covers 197.6 acres south of the A1306 from Goresbrook Interchange to the former Victor Engineering site by Marsh Way and offers a unique opportunity.

Please note: The Ford Body Plant (between Chequers Lane and Kent Avenue) is remaining in place and operational. Some of the teams have predicted a long term scenario where development values enable operations to move south of the railway lines, however this is not in Ford's plans.

In January 2002, the London Riverside Limited appointed 4 urban design teams to come up with ideas to facilitate the regeneration of South Dagenham and create a 'new heart' for the area.

The Mayor of London's new draft Spatial Development Strategy recognises east London and the Thames Gateway as London's key area for growth and the Mayor's priority area for regeneration and infrastructure improvements.

It seeks to ensure opportunity sites such as South Dagenham make the best use of land.

Proposals

The 4 teams were asked to come up with innovative solutions to create a distinct identity for the area which delivers the Mayor's strategic aims whilst meeting the desires of the local people.

The teams ideas then went out to public consultation the results of which can be downloaded from this web page. Maccreanor Lavington and West 8 were selected to continue on to the next stage - the production of a single, ambitious yet workable, framework for the site.

With such a large site and infrastructure challenges, development will inevitably take time and occur over a series of phases. Demolition of the Paint, Trim and Assembly site has commenced. The designers are currently working with a range of specialists covering issues such as transport and engineering.

However whilst this process goes on other London Riverside Limited Regeneration projects, such as the upgrading of Goresbrook Parade and environmental improvements to the A1306, will continue.

This web page will be updated at regular intervals with progress reports.
