The Creekmouth industrial area based around River and Thames Road is one of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham's largest employment areas. It consists of a wide range of businesses from small local manufacturers to major multinational companies.
The area has generally high levels of occupancy yet suffers from a range of problems which deter investment and prevent it being a workplace of choice. There are significant HGV movements and parking problems resulting in congestion reducing competitiveness.
It is an area where good modern investment is found alongside low grade premises and poor street scene. A number of firms from the Olympic zone are relocating to the Creekmouth area over the coming year.
The area lies next to the Barking Riverside site where a planning application has been submitted for nearly 11,000 new homes.
A partnership of the London Development Agency, English Partnerships, London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and Design for London, the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation and Transport for London appointed consultants in November 2006 to take forward work on how local congestion problems could be resolved and what environmental improvements and other measures could be implemented in order to improve the area for local businesses and attract inward investment.
