Barking Riverside is one of the largest development sites in London (800.28 acres). It is situated between the A13 and the River Thames.
The vision is for Barking Riverside is to create a model for sustainable living in the 21st century where best practice is used throughout.
Over the next 15-20 years over 10,000 new homes will be built to house a new community of around 25,000. The development will include new transport links such as East London Transit and the Docklands Light Railway and a new community school where all members of the community can take part in learning.
There will also be new community facilities offering a variety of living, working, leisure and cultural amenities. The development will also make the best use of the site's assets and potential, particularly the river, where residents of Barking and Dagenham will gain access to the river for the first time.
Barking Riverside is brownfield land (land that has been previously developed) and requires land remediation, site clearance, diversion of services and the removal of overhead power lines before this new community can be formed here.
In November 2003 the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, announced that English Partnerships and Bellway Homes would become partners in a new Joint Venture company to bring forward the development of Barking Riverside.
The project received planning permission in August 2007 for all 4 stages of development after Barking Riverside Limited signed a section 106 agreement with the Council. The agreement includes:
The planning consent recognises the importance of providing high quality public realm and environmental benefits, with 40% of the site designated as open space.
The first homes are currently being built and will be finished by the end of 2008.
