Working in partnership, we have been successful in bringing into the borough a number of major economic and social regeneration projects.
Under the next phase of Objective 2 European regional Funding, Barking and Dagenham stands to gain significantly from a total budget of £158 million. The 3 areas in the borough are identified as Thames, Riverside and Goresbrook. The focus will be on economic development for these areas.
The bid was made through the Thames Gateway Partnership and includes the borough of Havering as well as Barking and Dagenham.
The Ford Motor Company will invest £300 million directly in a new plant at Dagenham, £22.19 million is allocated for environmental improvements, training, property related issues, community development and community initiatives.
A further £65 million will come from private sector investments and £81.1 million from match finding. Barking and Dagenham is the lead authority.
A partnership with Newham, the private sector and the community sector. The bid is worth £13.6 million plus match funding of £40 million. Projects include the innovative A13 Artscape, road improvements at Choats Manor Way, infrastructure at Dagenham Dock and projects at Beckton.
With a budget of £2.6 million and match funding of £14 million, Barking and Dagenham is the lead organisation and programme manager. There are 24 projects covering physical improvements, training issues, child care, health provision and community development.
In the last 2 years, projects in Barking and Dagenham have benefited from grants amounting to £33.5 million, awarded from the governments Sustainable Communities Fund. The Fund supports programmes for health, housing, transport and environmental improvements in the Thames Gateway area.
In the first round of bidding in 2003 we won £13 million for 3 projects:
In addition to the money won by us, the London Development Agency was awarded £8 million for improvements to the infrastructure and Interchange at Dagenham Dock, making a total of £21 million.
The second round of bids in 2004 made £50 million available for regeneration projects in Thames Gateway. We won £9.5 million to pay for a new Child and Family Health Centre in Barking, the redevelopment of The Lintons council estate, play facilities for children at Castle Green in Dagenham, public art in Barking and the completion of work on the borough's new arts venue, the Broadway.
In addition, the London Development Agency won another £3 million to help develop Dagenham Dock as a centre for environmental technology, making a total of £12.5 million.
Barking and Dagenham was awarded £15.5 million over the next 3 years under the first round of the new Local Enterprise Growth Initiative, a government programme to boost business and enterprise in deprived areas.
Barking and Dagenham's plan includes a major programme to stimulate its local enterprise culture. It also includes the creation of a new enterprise partnership - Barking and Dagenham Enterprise - and the establishment of 2 new business centres, 1 dedicated to young entrepreneurs.
