One of our 7 community priorities is 'Promoting Equal Opportunities and Celebrating Diversity'. As a part of this we have a commitment to the principal and operation of equality of opportunity in terms of the delivery of quality services to our customers, and all of the people of the council.
This requires a whole organisational approach that focuses upon the mainstreaming of Equalities and Diversity considerations into the following areas:
In order to call ourselves a modernised and forward thinking local authority we must mainstream equalities and diversity into all aspects of our services and functions.
Service delivery requirements vary considerably. Equalities means providing and procuring council goods, services and works fairly and in ways that meet the diverse needs.
A central part of our Equalities and Diversity Strategy is our determination to effectively tackle all forms of discrimination, whether based on race, ethnicity, gender, disability, transgender/transsexual status, sexuality, religion or age or any other basis.
Each year we enter into contracts worth many millions of pounds for buying goods, works and services on behalf of the people of the borough. These services should be geared to their individual needs.
