Youth Support and Development

Youth Support and Development in Barking and Dagenham has recently undergone a major reorganisation and restructuring in order to offer a modern and effective service to young people living in the borough.

Barking and Dagenham is part of the London East Learning and Skills Council and the Connexions Service will be implemented from April 2002.

The restructuring of the Youth Support and Development Service was specifically planned to take account of the Connexions Service principles as well as to refocus priorities within the borough.

The number of full time posts has been increased and the service has introduced a 3 team structure, the main priorities of which are as follows;

Inclusion Team|

Developing youth work programmes aimed at Connexions liaison and schools links including the Excellence in Cities programme

The Vibe Team|

Developing youth work programmes within The Vibe and statutory youth work in other premises around the borough

Borough Team|

Developing links with the voluntary sector, detached work, community based projects, training, equal opportunities and young people's participation.

The core function however of the Youth Support and Development Service and all staff is to make a major contribution to raising young people's achievement through youth work programmes and to engage with disaffected young people.

This achievement will take a number of forms from raising young people's self esteem and confidence through to engaging with more formal learning and personal development opportunities.

Joint work with other council departments and partnership work with other agencies will be critical to the development of these programmes.
