Skills, Learning and Enterprise

Reception and Reintegration Unit

The Unit was set up in June and July 2002 with the co-operation of Access and Attendance with 2.4 tutors established a home tuition model which was continued until the end of the Summer Term 2003. This was developed after Easter to include some group lessons at Robert Clack City Learning Centre, Barking Library and the former Woodward Road Library.

The facility opened on a temporary site in St Georges Road in September 2003. The Unit aims to provide access to education for Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils whose attendance at school is below 10% or who are not attending at all. The programme is based upon the national curriculum. Literacy, numeracy, ICT and PE are offered as the core. Other subject areas are taught on a modular basis.

Most subjects are taught within the Unit, but others are delivered at a range of appropriate locations. Once a satisfactory level of attendance is achieved, the pupils are reintegrated into mainstream education, freeing up a new place for another low attending pupil. Whilst at the Unit, pupils are taken off the school roll, thus benefiting that school's overall attendance rate.

The Unit is divided into 3 classes, grouped into Key Stages. There is a small class with pupils in Key Stage 3. Pupils in Key Stage 4 are grouped by ability so that more able pupils may be taught at a faster rate as they progress towards GCSEs.

Pupils who have demonstrated that they require more support are taught at a speed to allow them to complete their work and thus accumulate GCSE coursework.

The Unit has become an examination centre for the Assessment and Qualification Alliance and we plan to enter year 11 pupils for GCSE in English, Maths.

There is access to the Flexi-Learning project for year 11 pupils. Pupils in year 10 have had access to Trident work experience.

Pupils in year 11 will have access to Connexions and will have individual careers interviews arranged for them to aid smooth progression to the next stage of education or employment.
