The post is partly funded by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and Roger is particularly keen to build partnerships with the Community Groups in Abbey and Gascoigne wards.
He wants to expand work placements for young people from the traditional commercial employer base and utilise organisations in the voluntary and community sector who are willing to give young people a chance. All young people under 16 should be individually risk assessed at the work place.
He wants to ensure that young people entering Work Related Learning programmes are safe and secure whether they are at college, with a training provider or at the workplace. He is developing a set of policies and procedures to try to ensure this.
More and more young people aged 14-19 are taking part in Work Related Learning in some form or another. From September 2004, Work Related Learning is a statutory requirement for all Key Stage 4 pupils.
He is examining the content of the various accredited programmes that are available and being offered. He offers advice to organisations wishing to offer accredited learning within the National Qualifications Framework.
He has prepared a borough framework for Work Related Learning which gives advice on what kinds of Work Related Learning training are available and preferred. Most programmes are detailed on the Department for Children, Schools and Families website on section 96. He has also prepared a local Work Related Learning training directory.
