J G O'Leary

£2

The Victoria County History is a major work of reference on local history, based on original research and achieving a high standard of scholarship.

It is designed to provide a comprehensive and authoritative history of each county and consists of general chapters concerned with topics covering the whole county and historical and topographical accounts of all the individual towns and villages.

In Essex the work is sponsored jointly by the Essex County Council and the London Boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Newham, Redbridge and Waltham Forest.

The University of London Institute of Historical Research has overall control and bears the central costs of publication by the Oxford University Press.

Research and writing is carried out by a small team of experts led by the county editor, Doctor Janet Cooper.
