The 1st selection of extracts related mainly to the old town centre of Barking and its principal industries at that time - fishing and the jute works.
The 2nd selection reminds us of the agricultural basis of the local economy.
Agriculture was predominant from the earliest times right through to the outward expansion of Barking and the building of the Becontree Housing Estate which swept away the gentry estates and the farming community.
Here is an invaluable record of an organic community from a world we have lost.
