Tony Clifford, Herbert Hope Lockwood
2002
£8
This is the 1st in a series of selections from a unique unpublished history of Barking written by William Holmes Frogley in the closing years of the 20th century. The author, son of a Barking fisherman, was an ordinary person who compiled this work as a labour of love.
A collaboration between Tony Clifford and Bert Lockwood which will prove to be a popular addition to our publishing programme.
The accompanying illustrations are reproduced in full colour.
Bert Lockwood explains who the author was - the result of years of research - and Tony Clifford has transcribed and annotated the manuscript.
Frogley takes us on a personally conducted tour of the streets of Barking at the beginning of the 20th century. Not only are we shown the buildings with summaries of their history, but we are also given a candid introduction to hundreds of residents.
This publication will interest the general reader and the local and family historian. It is an illustrated guidebook to Victorian Barking and a gossip column about our ancestors.
