The library service subscribes to a number of online services, bringing Information Services to your door! You can access these using your Barking and Dagenham library card number from any internet connected computer.
These services are free to Barking and Dagenham library members, so to access these services just type in your full library card number at the library card login option on each site and begin searching. The services available are:
150 reference books are available on this site containing information on a variety of subjects. Titles can be searched individually or across the whole of the service. Content includes Encyclopaedias, subject dictionaries and a handy crossword solver too. Notable titles included are Debrett's People of Today and Black's medical dictionary.
Oxford Reference online brings together language and subject reference books from one of the world's biggest reference publishers (Oxford University Press), into a single cross-searchable database. The Premium Collection contains over 100 dictionary, language reference, encyclopedia and subject reference books as well as the Oxford Companion series. Titles included are the Oxford companion to medicine, A-Z of medicinal drugs, and the Oxford companion to English literature.
Encyclopedia Britannica has been the world's most famous and authoritative source of information since 1768. The online version has 3 levels which make it suitable for use by all the family.
This site is suitable for ages 5-11, and includes a dictionary and subject searching for school subjects such as Art, Mathematics and Geography. Since it is UK based the information is relevant to the National Curriculum.
This site is suitable for ages 12-18. A good encyclopedia for homework or leisure use it includes links to the CBBC news site. Most articles include links through to other relevant websites and information.
The main Encyclopedia Britannica site, aimed at the 18+ age group, it includes links through to extra services such as news and journal articles.
Oxford Dictionary of National Biography|
This site has biographies of 50,000 people who shaped the history of the British Isles and beyond from earliest times to the year 2002. It can be searched by name, place, date of birth or death. Some of the entries are accompanied by illustrations.
The online version of the current Who's Who It contains over 33,000 short biographies, continually updated, of famous living and influential individuals, from all walks of life, worldwide. The online version also includes entries from the archive of Who's Who from 1898, known as Who Was Who. In some cases you can link to our other online biographical database Oxford Dictionary of National Biography for additional information.
The full Oxford English Dictionary available online. It is known as the most comprehensive dictionary of English in the world. It traces the development of English words over the last 1,500 years. It will help with crosswords too - search for words on the basis of definitions and also incomplete words if you only know a few of the letters!
Produced by Independence publishers, Issues is a comprehensive reference source published in the UK relating to topical issues in our society. The information includes statistics and reproductions of articles as well as opinions on the subjects of the day for example euthanasia, cloning and eating disorders. This site is particularly useful for secondary level and further education coursework.
This site allows access to the online Grove dictionary of music and other Oxford University Press art sources. This allows simultaneous searching across a wide variety of sources. Information on art from pre history to the present day. Includes biographies and information on artists, art movements, photography, design and world art. The online version includes images and links to over 40,000 pictures and images in museums and galleries worldwide.
The site includes the online version of the Grove dictionary of Music, Oxford Companion of Music and Oxford Dictionary of Music. The site includes over 5,000 articles on people and places connected to the world of music, musical instruments, techniques, and musical styles from Baroque to Hip Hop. The site includes links to images and audio musical examples. We also subscribe to the online Encyclopedia of popular music which can be searched from this site
