Family Reading promotes the library service and reading as an enjoyable activity to parents and children. It has been part of the library service since a 2-year government funded family reading project in 2000-2002.
Family Reading supports family literacy courses in primary schools by providing special taster collections for parents to use whilst they are on the course. They can borrow from a wide range of material for their children and themselves, join the library at the course's library session and then go on to use the borough's libraries.
The taster collections are also used at some children's centres and playgroups to encourage the reading habit from an early age. All the collections contain books for babies and stories and information books for children, some in community languages. Adults can browse through a range of novels and non-fiction books on popular topics.
Other services provided are:

Freda Golland, Senior Librarian (Family Reading Development), with one of the specially designed folding book display units which are being deposited in schools to support 'Keeping up with the Children' courses.
