If you have a question, problem or need to research something, the reference and information collection at Barking Learning Centre should be your first stop. Staff are available to help with your enquiry. Examples of information available in the collection at Barking are detailed on this page. All branch libraries also have small collections of reference books.
We have a range of materials and information sources suitable for use by small and large businesses or individuals: everything from regulations (including health and safety), to telephone and business directories and information on starting your own business.
We can put you in touch with a wide variety of groups, clubs and organisations in Barking and Dagenham, whatever your hobby, interest or needs. We aim to hold information on all groups active locally.
Online Community Information database|
Let us help you make your journey easier with our extensive selection of maps, timetables, street plans, guides and tourist information. This includes free leaflets of places of interest and UK holiday guides to London bus maps.
A comprehensive range of information to help you choose the right course. We hold local and national university prospectuses for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses as well as college prospectuses for colleges in greater London. We also have many general reference guides to careers and qualifications including writing CVs, job applications and selection tests.
A selection of magazines, national and local newspapers, with back copies. Some titles are available in community languages.
Current laws and non-technical guides to legal subjects such as employment, family and housing law to help explain your basic legal rights. To help with more technical enquiries we can help you to contact a solicitor, councillor or other agency who can assist and advise you. We also stock some legal textbooks for the law student or practitioner.
UK publications including recent legislation, statistics, white papers (reports and government proposals). We are also a European Information Centre (we currently have limited access to these materials).
A wide range of local and national data covering all aspects of our economy and society. This includes Census information, social, health and employment figures.
To help with project work for school, college or university, we have a broad range of materials. This includes reference copies of some course textbooks (A level and above), some topics files of articles on issues of current national, international or local interest such as environmental issues, Barking Riverside, and the London Olympics.
We subscribe to the Issues series of publications which have information available on leading topical subjects. The information is suitable for secondary school level through to higher education.
The library service subscribes to a number of online versions of books. These can be accessed free from any library in the borough or on any internet enabled computer using your Barking and Dagenham library card. The Online Reference Resources web page explains what is available.
