By the end of the 20th century, the growing use of computers has meant that archive collections nowadays often contain floppy disks and CDs. Magnetic media is known to have a very short lifespan.
The physical format, plus the problem of the contents being written with hardware and software which has become outdated, adds further concerns for archivists whose duty it is to preserve significant historical material for ever.
