Over the last 10 years, the fabric of Eastbury House has been restored to allow visitors to enjoy this wonderful Tudor building. The work has been done in three phases:
In the 1990s, behind-the-scenes improvements were carried out. Enhanced fire escape arrangements provided the opportunity for increased use of the House.
In 2003, as a result of a successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund, we were able to provide improved access to the building, a kitchen garden and a dedicated education room. These works concentrated on improving the west side of the building.
Work to renovate the east side of the building started in 2008, again supported by a very generous grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and matching capital funding from Barking and Dagenham Council.
It has allowed us to enclose the fire escape, repair rotten beams and weak flooring, and improve the central courtyard.
At the same time we took the opportunity to renew leaking lead on the roofs - unseen but very important. All these works, done by craftsmen, have now been finished. You can now see a beautiful building both inside and out.
This phase also includes interpretation of the House. Each room will contain an information panel, and there will be displays covering the history of Eastbury Manor House - its ups and downs - as well as some of the people and events associated with it. This work will be finished shortly after Easter 2010.
