Eastbury Manor House refurbishment project
In the 1990s, behind the scenes improvements were carried out and improved fire escape arrangements offered scope for increased use of the House (Eastbury phase 1).
A Development Plan was commissioned which led to a successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to improve access and provide a dedicated education room (Eastbury phase 2).
Phase 3 is now in detailed planning following another successful Heritage Lottery Fund bid submitted in 2005. The present award, supported by council funds, will deliver:
- Enclosure of the East Turret stairs: the brick turret fell down about 180 years ago. The plan is to restore the turret in timber and glass so that the present external spiral fire escape stair becomes an internal stairway providing visitors and users with better circulation around the building and allowing them to approach key first floor rooms, such as the famous Painted Chamber, in the way that the Tudor builders of the House intended
- Opening up the eastern attic and the creation of permanent exhibitions there on the history, use and occupants of Eastbury Manor House over the centuries, tying their stories into developments taking place locally in Barking and further afield as appropriate
- Creation of a temporary exhibition space on the first floor
- Interpretation of individual rooms and the courtyard through text, plans, drawings and photographs
- Further access improvements, with ramps replacing steps where appropriate and with level access from the house into the courtyard
The building work and exhibition installation started in March 2008 and will take about 12 months, leading to a full re-opening of the house in early 2009. During the building work, large parts of the house will be closed, but the house will continue to offer its present facilities, albeit on a limited scale.
