Barking and Dagenham have produced some of the most famous and successful sportsmen and women in the country. We have commissioned a tribute to these individuals in the form of a large dynamic sculptural installation.
The artwork includes silhouettes of Bobby Moore, Beverly Gull, Alf Ramsey and Jason Leonard, all of whom were champions and success stories of their time.
Situated on the mound at Castle Green alongside the A13, these sporting legends are forever immortalised in this highly visible position.
The artwork was produced by The Sculpture Factory, based in Hackney and takes the form of 2 dimensional metal plates that create the silhouette profiles of the sporting legends, positioned to create a dramatic outline and dynamic interaction with each other and the surrounding site.
The unveiling of the Sporting Legends art work took place on Saturday 27 October 2008, marking part of the Borough's celebratory contribution to the national launch of the Cultural Olympiad, a 4 year celebration of arts and culture in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic Games.
