What is meant by culture?
In Barking and Dagenham, the scope of activities that comprise our cultural provision include the following:
- The performing and visual arts, crafts and fashion
- Media, film, television and video
- Museums, archives and design
- Libraries, literature and publishing
- Heritage, architecture, landscape and archaeology
- Sport events and facilities
- Parks, open spaces, countryside recreation
- Children's play, playgrounds
- Tourism, festivals and attractions
- Information leisure pursuits
This is in line with the government's guidance issued by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The Local Cultural Strategy is available for review at all Public libraries and Council offices.
The Strategy is a working document subject to regular amendments and change as part of its review, therefore updated sections will be produced.
