Local Cultural Strategy - Summary

This is a summary of the borough's Local Cultural Strategy, our vision for Culture in Barking and Dagenham.

Key cultural issues for Barking and Dagenham

In order to realise the vision 2 overriding issues must be addressed. They are:

Improving the cultural infrastructure

The Local Cultural Strategy action plans include:

Development of the Valence Heritage site, Barking Park, the Broadway and Malthouse studio complex as visitor attractions
Development of a cultural infrastructure in the Barking Town Centre, Barking Riverside, Dagenham Dock and South Dagenham developments

Priorities for leisure include:

Systematic improvements to parks and green spaces
Developing events and improved relationships with sports clubs through delegated management agreements

Increasing participation

We will work to reduce barriers to participation by undertaking a baseline audit across all cultural service provision to establish user profiles. These will be used to set an annual percentage increase target.

The Strategy undertakes to identify and remove barriers to participation. Issues such as physical access, cost of events and activities, opening hours and less tangible areas such as the quality of customer care will be addressed.
