Local Cultural Strategy - Summary

 

This is a summary of the borough's Local Cultural Strategy, our vision for Culture in Barking and Dagenham.

 

Consultation

155 individuals, groups and organisations were contacted and asked to comment on the Strategy.

 

Copies were placed in local libraries and on our website.

 

In addition, information gained from earlier consultations was used to inform the priorities and key actions.

 

What the consultation told us

 

The key issues for the development of culture and cultural activity in Barking and Dagenham are

• Cost/lack of affordable childcare and transport
• Facilities for disabled people and for children
• Timing of events and activities
• Lack of appropriate publicity and information
• No high profile venues and lack of facilities for the arts
• Perception of Barking and Dagenham
• Education
• Reaching all sectors of the community

People's top priorities to improve cultural provision in the borough.

• Preserving local memory/history
• New cultural infrastructure
• Closer work between arts and schools and intergenerational work
• Recognition of and provision for the cultural diversity that now exists in Barking and Dagenham
• Improved cross-cultural communications/publicity of all cultural events
• Encouraging social regeneration through arts
• Production opportunities for writers and appreciation of literature
• Facilities for women with children

In 5 years time the cultural facilities that people would like to see in the borough.

• Archive and museum for arts, sculpture, photography, a cultural centre with links to educational institutions
• Permanent activity in Barking and Dagenham's 'cultural quarter' area
• Borough-wide recreational and sports facilities with provision for a variety of sports for all ages including athletics and golf
• A programme of (culturally) diverse events and festivals for all ages with the Town Show and Classical Concert promoting diversity
• Encouragement for ethnic minorities to visit local museums and theatre
• Community Cultural Forum representing all the communities - independently chaired
• More vocational training in the arts and courses not linked to examination
• More professional led activity

The responses clearly correspond with results of other consultation exercises, such as those for the Arts strategy, Heritage strategy and Parks and Green Spaces strategy.

 

They tell us that residents in the borough are concerned with their cultural heritage and access to arts, historical and leisure facilities.
