In 2006 the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham launched its film school which engaged young people from across the borough interested in film and media.
Aided with equipment purchased by the borough's Arts Programme and Cultural Development team as part of a previous project 'Digitise' and with the support of the European Social Fund and Learning Skills Council funding, we were able to create a borough resource for film for the young people involved in the project, which will hopefully develop into a resource for the whole community.
The purchased equipment included digital hand held camcorders with tripods and portable hard drives which allowed the participants to transport their 'work in progress' from school to home and back to the City Learning Centre where the workshops took place.
Workshops were delivered to secondary school students currently in year 10 and 12 who had been nominated by their schools as the activity which aimed to 'boost' their GCSE work and subsequent grades.
The week long programme was also delivered to 16-19 year olds from the Entry to Employment (E2E) programme at Barking and Dagenham Training Services and Barking College National Diploma in Media students.
The sessions were facilitated by professional film artists Rayna Nadeem and Stuart Bamforth, Inge Blackman and Nick Marq and supported by local Higher Education Media students, at the City Learning Centre.
During the week programme the young people were given film making knowledge, experiences and skills including story boarding, costume, filming, sound and editing which enabled them to independently create a short film within their own friendship groups.
In Addition a series of 4 'surgeries' were set up where the young people could trouble-shoot and talk to each other and 'the experts' about their films.
The Barking and Dagenham's Young Person's Film Festival screened at the Vue Cinema 11 July 2006, acted as an opportunity for all the young people involved in the film school workshops to receive recognition for and share their work with their families, friends, mentors and teachers.
Arts Programme and Cultural Development will now seek to establish a long term training initiative which generates annual projects and taster sessions across the community to develop interest and explore opportunities to commit to longer-term or more committed training in film making and production.
