The key feature of the busy Goresbrook Interchange.
2 roundabout features created by Thomas Heatherwick Studios, also known as Scylla and Charybdis, after the 2 rocks through which Jason had to pass on his epic journey with the Argonauts.
The theme reflects the 'epic' journeys of the commuters passing over the viaduct above as the road below rises out of the ground below to meet them on their journey.
Thomas' design assimilates the existing roundabouts; fabricated from sprayed concrete on a steel mesh attached to steel cables running from the central axis to the existing circumference.
The height of the roundabouts correspond directly to the width of the existing roundabouts and are therefore not exactly 'twin'.
They are painted black as with fresh tarmac rising out of the ground and are accessible by foot - providing a footpath around their perimeter that enables residents from the adjacent Scrattons Farm estate to walk to the leisure centre facilities from the east end of the estate as well as via Gale Street subway at the west.
