The Sydney Russell Memorial Award was established in 1988 in recognition of the outstanding contribution made by the late Sydney John Russell to community service in the Borough.
Mr Russell was born in Woodford in 1906. He took up work as Warden of Kingsley Hall in September 1932 and continued to show an active interest in that establishment until his death in 1988.
Mr Russell had, in his many years in the Borough, been actively involved in many areas of voluntary service, including Old People's Welfare and the Voluntary Services Association.
He was a Governor in a number of local schools and was co-opted member of the Social Services Committee as well as being a member of the local Community/Police Consultative Group. He was made a Freeman of the Borough in 1959.
Local organisations and individuals are invited annually to submit nominations for the Award. The recipient will be a local person who has shown outstanding service in the voluntary sector within the Borough.
If you are aware of any such persons and would wish to nominate them for the Award, which will be presented by the Mayor at the Ceremonial Council meeting on 21 May 2010, please contact Janet Allen at the address shown.
All nominations should be submitted by no later than Friday 2 April 2010.
