Our Olympic Pledge

We want London 2012 to provide:

A more skilled and healthier population
A more successful economy
A stronger and more involved community
Improved buildings and facilities, including new leisure facilities; and
Good-quality housing that meets our community's needs

We will do the following:

Modernise and extend the public transport network to get residents, visitors, workers and competitors to and from the Olympics easily and quickly
Provide high-quality, fully accessible sports facilities for our community (including a new wet-and-dry facility at Becontree Heath) and offer these facilities to competitors to help them prepare for the Games
Use the 2012 Olympics to deliver a 5 year sports and physical-activity programme through our schools and leisure facilities. We aim to involve 50% of the local adults and children in sports and fitness activities by 2012
Support people with sporting talent to develop their potential with a view to them being chosen to take part in the London 2012 Olympics and win medals
Use our Enterprise Plan, funded by the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative, to tap into the potential for building firms, both large and small, to contribute to the building programme for the Games and the regeneration of the Thames Gateway. This will bring new jobs, economic success and a better quality of life to the local community
Help deliver the technical solutions that will make the 2012 Games the 'green games' using the Sustainable Industrial Park and the planned Environmental Technology Resource Centre for London at Dagenham Dock
Train local residents to become highly-skilled in key areas such as health care, information technology, business administration, hospitality and leisure, allowing them to take advantage of the opportunities created by the 2012 Games. We will develop a creative and cultural industries centre in Barking town centre that will continue far beyond the 2012 Games
Involve our community in our cultural programme that will contribute to the 4 year London Cultural Festival that will start in 2008. Our aim is for local residents to be part of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Games
Aim to provide at least 500 volunteers from all parts of our community for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We will help them to get access to training and support to carry out a variety of roles
Use the opportunity of a world event to promote tourism in Barking and Dagenham, and build a stronger understanding and respect between our many different communities
