The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be one of the largest events ever to be held in London. An estimated 500,000 people will come to the city to watch and compete in the Games, and as many as 4 billion people worldwide will watch the Games on television.
Great Britain will be demonstrating its ability not only to compete at the highest sporting level, but also to deliver Games of the highest standard.
As the London Borough next door to the Olympics, Barking and Dagenham will serve as the Gateway to the Games for many thousands of the visitors, sports professionals and workers who will make the London Olympics a success.
We will make the Olympics a gateway to opportunity for our residents, unlocking the creative potential of our diverse communities so that the London Olympics leave a permanent legacy in Barking and Dagenham.
The skills that we develop for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will benefit London's economy for many years to come and equip local people for well-paid, fulfilling careers.
The contracts won by our businesses, including our construction companies, will bring new resources into the local economy, driving development in the retail and service sectors, as well as in industry.
The 2012 Games is a catalyst for all to focus on sport and activity leading to long-term and lasting improvements in our residents' health. Opportunities for our young athletes to compete in the Games will raise pride in the community and promote cohesion among our diverse population.
