Freedom of the Borough Presentations

Sir Trevor Brooking CBE and the Royal Anglian Regiment have received the Borough's highest honour.

The ceremony to mark Barking and Dagenham's Freedom of the Borough took place on Wednesday 27 January at 7pm at The Broadway, Barking.

Five recipients stepped up to the rostrum to receive Barking and Dagenham's Council highest honour, the Honorary Freedom of the Borough on Wednesday, 27 January. The ceremony was held at The Broadway, Barking.

One of the recipients was the Royal Anglian Regiment. General Sir John McColl, Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, accepted the Freedom of the Borough on behalf of the regiment.

For the Royal Anglian, which is currently seeing front-line duty in Afghanistan, it means that they are able to conduct a parade in the town with fixed bayonets and regimental band playing with colours flying - an event which is due to take place in the summer.

Councillor Liam Smith, Council Leader, said:

"It is with great pride that we recognise the contribution made to the community by the regiment and all the other recipients of the honorary freedom of the Borough. They are all very special people. And they are all great ambassadors for the borough of Barking and Dagenham."

Also receiving the Freedom of the Borough, were:

Sir Trevor Brooking CBE, capped 47 times and one of West Ham United Football Club's favourite sons. He receives his award for his outstanding contribution to sport.

Sir Paul Grant, head teacher at Robert Clack School, for his outstanding service, dedication and support to education in the borough.

Miss Vera Reynolds, recipient of the People's Award, voted for by local people, and is recognised for her outstanding voluntary service to the local community.

Councillor Mohammed Abdul Rehman Fani, for his outstanding service to the community, including 20 years as a Councillor for Abbey Ward.

Roger Luxton OBE, the former corporate director for children's services at Barking and Dagenham Council, is recognised for his outstanding service, dedication and support to education and children's services in the Borough. His award was received by Simon Luxton on behalf of his father.
