Statement by the Leader of the Council on the BBC's All White in Barking documentary

"I welcome the attention the white working class population is receiving through the BBC's White series.

"Areas such as Barking and Dagenham have in the past not always received the support they have needed to fully meet the needs of their residents.

"White working class people are an important part of our community, and Barking and Dagenham Council has always worked hard to meet their and everyone else's needs through housing, education and training. We continue to do this through our ambitious plans for the borough which includes building 24,000 new homes and investing over £200 million in our secondary schools.

"All White in Barking shows that where people from different ethnic backgrounds do get to know each other, the outcome is a positive one.

"There are people who will, through deliberate lies and playing on peoples' concerns, want to drive communities apart. We are committed to meeting the needs of all our communities, and working hard to create shared understanding and shared opportunities for everyone."
