Barking and Dagenham Council has won the prestigious 'Most improved Council of the year' award at the Local Government Awards, run by the Local Government Chronicle, on Monday 17 March 2008.
In announcing the Council's winning entry, the judges stated that the Council is improving across the board and that it is an ambitious authority that is working hard to successfully tackle many issues.
Councillor Charles Fairbrass MBE, Leader of the Council said:
"It is a real honour for the borough and for the Council to win one of the top awards for local Government.
"This award recognises the considerable progress the Council and its partners have made to improve the lives of all residents in the borough. We are an ambitious Council and are proud to serve our community.
"We are well on the way to creating a vibrant borough and community for everyone. Thousands of new homes will be built in the borough; we have plans to invest over £200 million in all secondary schools; and we are continually improving the services that we provide to residents."
Rob Whiteman, Chief Executive of the Council said:
"This prestigious award is for the hard work and dedication of all colleagues across the Council.
"The judges said that they were 'bowled over' on their visit to the borough and found commitment, motivation and pride in everyone they met from strong front-line services through to strong political and managerial leadership.
"They said that the Council is at the heart of highly effective partnership working that is making a real difference to the lives of everyone in the borough.
"I would like to thank all colleagues for their commitment and energy to work alongside all our customers in order to meet their needs."
