The Road to Learning 2008

Transferring from infant to junior classes

If your child goes to an infant school, he or she will transfer to a junior school in September after their 7th birthday. Children at infant schools in the borough will normally transfer at the age of 7 to their linked junior school.

Most linked schools are on the same site and have the same name. We treat the following as linked schools.

Parents and carers of children at Furze and Village infant schools and Eastbury primary school will need to let the Head Teacher of their linked junior school know before Friday 25 April 2008 if they want a place there. The governors of William Ford Church of England Junior School are responsible for deciding on places. The same closing date applies.

If you want to transfer your child to a non-linked junior or primary school in the borough, you should contact the Head Teacher of your preferred school before Friday 25 April 2008.

It is always possible that there will be more applications for places than there are places available in your preferred school. When this happens, we use the admission criteria.

Admission to William Ford Church of England Junior School is the responsibility of the governing body of the school, not the borough council.

For all community junior and primary schools (except William Ford Church of England Junior School) we use the following criteria in priority order to decide which children should be offered places.

Admission criteria

Priority 1

Children who are in the care of a local authority.

Priority 2

Children who have a brother or sister at the school or the linked infant school on the same site at the date they are due to start school (see note 2).

Priority 3

Children at the infant school linked with the junior school.

Priority 4

Children living in the school's neighbourhood area at the date that the child is due to start school (see note 3).

Priority 5

Children who live closest to the school, measured in kilometres by the nearest available walking route using recognised footpaths, by-ways and public highways which our Highways Department are responsible for numbering and maintaining.

Important notes

  1. The child's home must be the permanent address where they live with their legal guardian. This address should be named for the parent's or carer's council tax bill where child benefit is addressed
  2. Brother or sister (sibling) means a full, half, step, adopted brother or sister or long-term fostered child living at the same address and attending the named school. Please make sure you name all siblings on your application form. If they are not listed on your form, we cannot consider them under priority 2 listed above
  3. The Admissions and Attendance Team or the school will be able to tell you the name of your neighbourhood school
  4. Measuring the walking distances from home to school can only take account of the routes available at the closing date. This is because, if roads or route alterations are being built or repaired, we cannot guarantee that the route will be ready by the time the children start school. Once the route is ready, we will measure applications made after that date using the new route
  5. Within any 1 criterion, we will use distance from home to school as a tie-breaker for pupils who have equal claim for a place. We will measure distances using SIA's measuring system Smart
  6. It is important to remember that going to a particular nursery class does not guarantee a place at, or priority for, a particular infant or primary school. Also, going to a particular primary or junior school does not guarantee a place at, or priority for, your child at a particular secondary school
  7. We cannot consider other circumstances not listed in the criteria. We must be consistent in our judgement and use only those criteria that we have already agreed
  8. If we discover that we have given your child a place based on false, inaccurate or misleading information, we will withdraw the place and may take legal action
