Dear Parents and Carers,
As your young children prepare to start their early years education, these web pages will introduce you and them to the excitement of 'the road to learning'. It contains information about a number of pre-school learning opportunities and arrangements for getting a place in nursery, reception (infant) and junior classes.
Barking and Dagenham is a small, friendly borough with schools and other learning opportunities close to all neighbourhoods. The borough has a good reputation for its teaching and learning. Head Teachers and governors of the schools will welcome you to visit any of the schools to see the range of opportunities and activities available for young children.
As well as the nursery classes at the borough's schools, there are pre-school day nurseries and other arrangements for young children below 5 years of age. You will find some information about these services in these web pages. You can get more information in the free booklet 'Child Choices' (
PDF 1.17M), which is published by the Childcare Service in the borough.

A child's first steps in education are vitally important. The staff in all the schools, nursery classes, pre-school day nurseries and in our offices look forward to working closely with you to offer the best possible future for the children of Barking and Dagenham.
Yours faithfully
Roger Luxton OBE
