Building Schools for the Future

March 2010

We aim to transform teaching and learning through Building Schools for the Future in all of our secondary schools and Trinity Special School. These schools will benefit from major financial investment with extensive remodelling to the existing buildings and new build.

Barking and Dagenham is currently in dialogue with 4 bidders. The aim is to select a strategic partner to enter into a Building Schools for the Future Local Education Partnership and a partner to provide an Information Communications Technology (ICT) managed service to schools.

The local authority is using a split procurement process, where the Local Education Partnership and ICT are procured separately. The contracts are worth £25million for ICT and up to £250million for construction.

Bidders who met the pre-qualifying criteria and have now entered into the next phase of dialogue with the local authority are:

Pre-Qualification Questionnaires, which asks for details on the economic, financial standing and the ability and technical capacity of bidders, were received in September 2009.

In the current phase of the procurement process, short listed bidders are asked to continue their dialogue with the local authority and schools to develop a greater understanding of how they would carry out the work on our schools.

Bidders will submit their final proposals based on the 2 sample schools, Dagenham Park Church of England School and The Sydney Russell School, in spring 2010.

The sample schools will be the first to be transformed under Building Schools for the Future. The selected partners are expected to be confirmed in May 2010 and building work is likely to start in October 2010. Building work on each school will take a carefully phased approach. Under Building Schools for the Future no student shall be disadvantaged whilst building work is in progress.
