City Learning Centre

Eastbrook and Green Lane

Information for schools and software available

You are now able to book your places for academic year 2008-2009 for assisted and non-assisted sessions at the borough's City Learning Centre at Green Lane and Eastbrook.

If you require subsidised transportation to and from the centres your school will need to contribute the sum of £45 per class per trip (as per the communication sent to all Head Teachers earlier this year from the Centre Manager).

Each school may bring each of its classes once per academic year and take advantage of the subsidised transport (subject to availability). Alternatively each school is entitled to unlimited sessions (free of charge) if they make their own travel arrangements (again subject to availability).

The City Learning Centre works on a first come first served system. Please be aware the centre is booked for other adult sessions as well as school groups therefore the centre is unable to guarantee that places will be available for every school in the borough. Those schools who do book up in time before the centre is fully booked will secure their places by completing an official booking form and signing an agreement to pay the funds due (if transport is requested).

Please note: The City Learning Centre is starting to receive an increasing number of booking requests for the next academic year and therefore the centre would advise that you reserve your sessions with us as soon as possible.

For further information regarding what the City Learning Centre can offer your school in regards to lesson plans and lesson assistance contact the City Learning Centre Learning Manager (Chris Ward) on 020 8270 6814 or chris.ward@lbbd.gov.uk.

For further information regarding booking actual sessions contact the City Learning Centre Administrator (Laura Pace) via email at laura.pace@lbbd.gov.uk and provide details of your school, what terms you would be interested in attending the centre and whether you would require lesson assistance. You will then be emailed back with dates that are currently available at both centres based on your requirements.

Our work with local schools over the years has been very successful to date. Individual classes from local schools can hire rooms free of charge to undertake lessons or special 'project related' sessions. These sessions can be delivered by the teacher or can be delivered by one of our dedicated learning facilitators. Students can undertake a full day of fun but educational computer related activities, which all relate to the national curriculum, at either of our centres.

Students are requested to bring a packed lunch with them which is consumed within the centre during lunch time. We also have an agreement with the schools (which are adjacent to our centres) enabling us to have access to a section of their playing fields for 30 minutes from 12pm until 12.30pm so that (weather permitting) students are able to go outside, get some fresh air and stretch their legs whilst being supervised by members of teaching staff.

Mineral water is available throughout the day for all students and any short breaks (as well as lunch) may be taken in our large reception/foyer area (if at Green Lane) or around the tables in the room hired for the class (if at Eastbrook) as and when classes feel the need to have a break from the computer rooms.

If schools decide they wish for their session to be delivered by one of our learning facilitators an example of what can be offered can be found below.

All the following courses can be delivered by centre staff and are individually prepared to suit each school's requirements. Each school can also mix and match to fulfil their needs.

All generic application software requirements up to Key Stage 3 in consultation with Chris Ward.

Schools may prefer to select from the wide range of software we have available (some of which are listed below) to suit all key stages and technical help is on hand if pre arranged with either of our centres.

Loan of City Learning Centre equipment

We also loan equipment to schools if not being used in either of our centres. We can supply digital cameras, video cameras, data logging equipment, Lego Dacta and tablet PCs. There may be issues with software licensing so please contact us for more information.

We will require a report on the activity and examples of the work completed as 'payment' for any equipment loans.

Further information regarding what we are able to offer schools (as well as a loan request application form) can be downloaded and printed from the Document Download Section.

Please contact our Learning Manager Chris Ward for more information on school bookings and/or equipment loans.
